Description

Farming is used to grow seeds into vegetables and fruits. There are currently 14 crop plants available. Crop plants include potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, onions, mustard, strawberries, gooseberries, spinach, rice grass, sunflowers, sego lilies, cattails, and rhubarb.

You can only farm on your tribe's land. Tribal rank may affect your ability to plant a farm. Anyone in a tribe can tend a plant, but only the farmer who planted it or the tribal leader may harvest it.

To farm, you will need a shovel, crop seeds, a water container, and fertilizer. Fertilizer is optional, but highly recommended, as crop plants will only grow to 75% without it.

The Primary Attribute and Secondary Attribute for Farming are Intelligence and Strength.

Foraging, Fishing, and Hunting are the support skills for Farming.

Crop Seeds

To obtain crop seeds, forage until you find a crop plant. Right-click on the plant in your inventory. Choose "Extract" to extract a seed from one plant. Choose "Extract All" to extract the seeds from an entire stack.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer can be obtained from animal guts and raw fish. To turn these items into fertilizer, right-click on them in your inventory. Choose "Create Fertilizer" and the item will become fertilizer. A stack of raw fish must be converted into fertilizer one fish at a time.

Effects on Crops

You can give your plant 1, 2, 3, or 4 shots of fertilizer. The effect varies according to the season The following table shows the effects on growth rates over time for Spring.

24 hrs 48 hrs 72 hrs
1 28 32 37
2 32 69 100
3 37 78 100
4 40 87 100

Planting a Farm

To plant a farm, equip a shovel in your right hand. Right-click the Farming Action Icon to open the Farming Panel. Right-click the Plow Land icon to plow a patch of land large enough to plant one crop plant. Repeat this to prepare a small field. The ground appearance changes to indicate where you have plowed.

To plant a seed, stand over your plowed land, right-click on the seed in your inventory, and choose "Plant". Your plant will appear on the ground.

Monitoring Growing Crop Plants

To view a crop plant's current state, click on it. You will see what kind of plant it is (carrot, onion, etc.), the percentage of growth towards full maturity, and how many game days it has left before it dies.

You will also see six gauges:

  • The Sun Gauge, which measures the amount of light the plant has received. This amount is currently a constant.
  • The Water Level Gauge, which measures the amount of water your plant currently has available to it. This amount decreases every game day. It increases when the plant is watered. The water level also increases when it rains.
  • The Weed Level Gauge, which measures the current amount of weeds impeding the plant's growth. Weeds have a chance of appearing every game day. Clear the weeds to reduce this amount to zero.
  • The Pest Level Gauge, which measures the current amount of pests harming your plant. Pests have a chance of appearing every game day. Eliminate the pests to reduce this amount to zero.
  • The Fertilizer Level Gauge, which measures the current amount of fertilizer available to the plant. This amount decreases every game day. Apply fertilizer to the plant to increase it.
  • The Maturity Level Gauge, which measures the plant's growth. Plants yield the highest amounts when harvested at 100% maturity.

Tending Growing Crop Plants

Tending plants is very easy. All they need to grow to 75% of maturity is water, and the occasional weeding or pest removal. To grow to 100% maturity, plants must be fertilized on a regular basis.

Anyone in a tribe can tend growing crop plants.

If a plant is left untended long enough, it will wilt. A plant that has only been wilted a short time can be revived by proper tending. If a plant remains wilted long enough, it will die. Plants also die if they reach their expiration date without being harvested. Dead plants must be destroyed to make room to plant new ones.

There are six tending actions associated with a crop plant: Water Plant, Clear Weeds, Clear Pests, Fertilize, Harvest, and Destroy. You access these actions by right-clicking on the plant.

  • Water Plant: To water a plant, you must have a container of water in your inventory. Choose "Water Plant" from the right-click menu.
  • Clear Weeds: Choose "Clear Weeds" from the right-click menu.
  • Clear Pests: Choose "Clear Pests" from the right-click menu.
  • Fertilize: To fertilize a plant, you must have fertilizer in your inventory. Choose "Fertilize" from the right-click menu.
  • Destroy: Choose "Destroy" from the right-click menu.

Harvesting a Crop Plant

A crop plant may be harvested once it has reached 75% of maturity. However, yields are much better if a plant is harvested at 100% maturity.

Only the farmer who planted the plant or the tribal leader may harvest it.

When a plant reaches 75% maturity, a new option appears in the right-click menu: Harvest Plant. Choose this option to harvest the plant.
