This whole thread assumes sync issues will be fixed before archery comes in
First of all i want to say im very very glad this subforum got open. It really speaks to the reactivity of the devs to the community and it was a much needed but simple change.
Now, I think im mostly speaking to an audience of pvpers if the reader here is interested in this subforum at all. Many of you, im guessing, had some kind of ranged combat in mind when you heard about xsyon as an fps mmo. Some (perhaps many) of you even came from Darkfall like myself, wet with anticipation of the reincarnation of archery in a fps mmo. Obviously, and unfortunately, archery is not in. Bows may be technically in but archery is still in the works.
In the mean time, i think we should open a discussion on how archery should be implemented, given what we know about how long it takes to implement new features, and keeping in mind how simple or complex it may be would drastically change the speed at which archery enters the game. I think most of us would be grateful for any form of fps archery in game, but a discussion on it would be productive and interesting in the mean time, even if our ideas are not directly adapted.
Personally, i think a game with a combat system that goes as fast as this needs an archery system that can keep up pace. Nocking, aiming, shooting and reloading should all be capable of happening while sprinting. If its not, no one will use archery except for opening moves before people engage in melee. As far as arcs go, i think Darkfall is a good comparison. Not entirely straight, but straight enough for mid-long range distances requiring only slight arcs.
Damage for bows in this game should be low, in my opinion. The best bow with the highest stats and highest skill in this game should take off no more than 1/10 of someones health. Think about it- no one in this game can heal without getting a break in combat. Currently, if you run from someone, all you have to do is maintain a straight line, and you're golden. Were archery added, the dynamics of running away from battle change entirely. You can't heal efficiently while running away. Furthermore, because of archery, you wont be able to run in a straight line, which means turning to dodge arrows, which means your chaser will catch up and engage melee and stickyback you if he gets a chance (although this game is even more fast paced than darkfall so perhaps not).
Archery's deadliness should be limited, because of our limited ways to recover health, effective only for those who are accurate and dedicated.
One last, very important thing:
There NEEDS to be a way to change from 1 weapon set to another -- from melee to archery -- without drag dropping weapons!!
This is a huge issue already when people are caught off guard, fishing or whatever. They only have a fishing pole in their hand. Their axe is on their back. Without the ability to hotkey a weapon anywhere, they have to run away and open their bag and drag a weapon into their paper doll all without dying and keeping distance. This would be a disaster if archery got implemented
