View Full Version : What do you tell your friends?

I have recently decided that it is a bad idea to post here, or even read, because this seems to be the place to beat dead topics to death and generally argue over and over about the same issues, basically things that annoy me.

Retrospective : I have realised that, as i tend to do, i have rambled into a different topic, written far too much that i doubt will be properly read, but i quite like what I have written, so I will leave it here. If you don't want to read it all, just answer the question. :)

I finally have a question I would like to address to people in general, well aware this could very well be a bad idea, here we go:

When friends ask you about the game... what do you say to them? More specifically, what do you say when they ask you whether it is worth buying.

What i tend to say to my friends summed up [which i hate doing, but my friends hate it when I ramble] is;

Do not buy the game yet.

The longer version of what i say; It's a good game, with problems. Only get it if you like the idea and want to support it and help it get better... do not get it if you have high expectations and want to play a polished, finished product. Basically the game needs to release soon, or people are going to start loosing interest, and in my eyes, the game is at a point where, if most of the major bugs/problems are reasonably dealt with, the game is good to go. All mmos start off with problems and the only way to fix them is to set off and deal with them as they appear. And the devs seem to be doing a good job.

But I advise my friends not to buy the game. Why? Because I tend to be very flexible with certain types of games, and the first thing my friends tend to do when looking at screenshots, is compare it to minecraft, visually. Perhaps i just need new friends... but this is not the main reason.

I have realised that many mmo gamers will burn through the list of features this game has to offer in the race to be "the first", and quickly find that in doing so they have run out of things to do, and with a currently spotty pvp feature, they will get bored, whine abit and leave, thus "wasting their money". Although I tend to consider anyone who jumps into a game without properly looking into the features and progress loosing their money "Idiot Tax".

Personally I can find the fun in all aspects of the game, and even wandering around, mapping the area in my head, or gathering up resources for my tribe cause me endless amusement. But i find modern mmos tend to encourage us to see the beginning of a game as something to burn through, racing towards the finish line where pvp and endless grind await.

Whereas Xsyon, for some mindsets is all "grind" the same way as, yes, minecraft. But the point to it is satisfying, and i do not consider it grind myself. Building up a tribal area, scavenging for loot, helping my tribemates, all are immensly satisfying for me, to the point where i forget i am repeatedly doing something repetetive, because i get lost in a world of goodness, where there are so many repetetive things i could be doing, i never become bored, because it is fun.

So what is my point, aside from I can talk for a while without really saying much? Well mainly I guess, my friends can be fringe eliteist arseholes, i probably just don't want them ruining a game i consider slightly personal [or let them notice the fanboy drool i cover it in], and i could be amused by kicking a can, if they changed the colour and type of can abit every time.

I basically say its mostly crafting game that isnt finished yet. If you are looking for a crafting game that is complete there are a few better options although in all fairness not many, on crafting aspect this game as it is competes with even the best of crafting games.

If you want pvp dont bother, play Darkfall.

If you are bored please dont feed the McMMO beast by paying for RIFT. If you are bored and its between RIFT or Xyson please go with Xyson, in fact, if you need the money I might do it for you instead of you buying RIFT.

That is my stance atm.

I appreciate the reply, and note that the friends i was talking about are all playing rift and gently making love to it over and over again any time i try to talk to them :)

What I've been telling everyone in our group is if you liked SWG you'll like Xsyon with a few caveats and a lot of patience. That's not a ton of folks. Out of our entire group of gaming friends and family there are 4 of us who liked SWG and double that who absolutely hated it, the rest think it was ok. Out of the four only two of us are playing right now. It really is a niche game.

The same thing i do with any other game... I send them a link to the features, the boards, home page, or whatever i feel is important, and let them make up their own mind...

I've talked my friends into too many MMOs that crashed and burned, that i'd almost feel bad if i pushed them to buy one and it did it again... If they ask me if i am having fun, i say yes, but tell them to read about it, get info, and form their own decision, just like i did :)

I only told one friend. I told him it was a game that still needed some work, and that he may want to hold off. He bought it anyway (probably though I was gonna be ahead of him) and is having a lot of fun.

Personally I don't care if this game isn't finished. I'm glad to give a bit of my money to a small team of passionate devs with an original vision. Anything that will help steer the genre away from EQ and all its clones is good in my book.
None of my friends play online games however, so I can't really answer your question, OP.

I personally faked my death for the express purpose of having to tell any friends. It's easier this way.

I am telling them to wait. The game engine/code cannot support the current client base at the moment, so inviting more people is irrelevant.

Rift will last another month or so, people are already level 50 and complaining about more content (as they did with DCUO).

Hopefully in a month the Xsyon engine/code can support 1k people logged in at once. Then we will be set. 1k clients would make an excellent Xsyon game world.

I tell them the game isn't complete.. that the concept is great but that they should wait. I tell them the game still feels like an Alpha but it has more
potential than any of the games I've read about tested or played in the last 3-4 years.

I ran a major clan in Darkfall and still actively play. I have alpha and beta tested games such as vindictus, DF, warhammer, and rifts. This game IS what "we" wantg.. its just way to early to be "excited" over it. I have hyped it up told all the great ideas only to have poeple buy the preorder play a day and a half and say fuck this and go back to previsouly played games.

I truely feel like a game should be in fully working order before a release date is even hyped. Changes and additions can come afterward but general game play and funcunatily should be implemented first.. and it hasn't been here.

Personally i tell them that crafting is working great , although it is missing things . Combat is lacking , but is in the works for an overhaul , so i'm not too worried about it atm .

The game world and graphics are stunning and that the Dev/s are fantastic in that even though the game is having some horrible problems atm , they keep us informed , and are coding like machines to try and fix it , with at least daily updates on the situation .

Whether they should buy i leave up to them , but i do point out that while its having problems , i personally think the game is worth supporting with a Pre-Order and can only get better along the way .

The first thing I tell them that the game is NOT minecraft, even if they want to compare the two. And then if they continue to compare it about minecraft, such as crafting or the like, I tell them that it's like the Alpha-version of Minecraft in terms of stability -- there are still a few bugs, features that have yet to be implemented, and occasional crashes and lag, but nothing that is unplayable ( for me ).

Most of my friends and I are savvy tech people, so I tell them that even though I can run it easily, they might not be able to with the same stability as I do. They of course understand and then ask about the rest of the game. I generally tell them it's an open world, do-it-yourself game. I tell them about Tribes and relate to Age of Conan in that aspect -- take over territory, build on that territory, extract resources, and craft.

I told them about the safe zones and then about the PvP, and how the PvP is very unrefined at the moment. Most of my friends don't mind it so long as there is SOME form of PvP -- most like Sandbox games with crafting as the main element. Most seem to think quite highly of Xsyon. I mention how the developers actually talk to their player base and get actual raw feedback from the players, and they start to like it a lot more.

However, in the end, I tell them to either - (1) Wait until the game is more finished or, (2) Buy the game going in and expecting an Alpha-like game ( for the time being ).

Most of them want to get in on the game while it's fresh, like they did with Minecraft. As of right now, there are about 8 of us playing. We're not sure if we want to join a clan or make one ourselves yet. The rest of my friends are still undecided and/or waiting to get paid.

I tell them not to buy it and that I'm only riding out the 2 free months in a desperate attempt to make it worth playing.

They tend to buy it anyway as an excuse to get a neat sig.

I tell them of the promised features, the potential, and the intimate dev team.

Then I warn them, "Don't buy this game unless you want to be a part of it's development, birthing pains and it's potential epicness".

people really need to learn the difference between 'we plan to have feature x' and 'we promise to have feature x'

Buy it. Let whatever crap you're playing now run out. When Xsyon goes down for maintentance, you can play your old crap, if you can even stand to anymore after having played Xsyon (I can't).

Oh, and start with whatever that profession is that starts off with a saw. I make you tools, you supply me wood blocks, handles, and so on. But don't live too close to me, I'll travel to you, since even though we're friends, there's no reason for you to be crowding my space and cluttering up my landscape with your face.

The Good
The Bad
The Ugly

Then let them make their own decisions.

In concept the game has everything that we want to play.

Delivery to date has been bad.

Suprise 'uh-ohs' have been downright demoralizing (the combat code making armor mean nothing, combat mechanics, etc.)

It's a definite risk, but if you can afford a $40 gamble it may be worth it.

They have 2 months to get on/show us they are on the right path.

tick tock.
