I'm not really upset or glad to see it go. But I'm wondering, why exactly did they get rid of it?

If you have to ask that question you might have been a part of the global chat community which couldn't fill a thimble full of knowledge. If anything general chat needs to be trimmed down to a radius around you not 4 freaking zones, I don't care what is going on in zone so and so when it's 3 zones away.

Agreed, it needs to be trimmed down to one zone or a radius around your character that is about half a zone in all directions.
