Placing Items

Hello,
I just started the game today and I like it so far :)

I placed a totem for a homestead. My pack is full and I wanted to put down some of my scavenged/crafted items, but when I do that it destroys them. How can I store stuff in my homestead out of my pack so that I have room to forage for more? I cannot make baskets or bins, I do not have recipes for those.
Also, I made a tarp but can't seem to find a way to use it.

You need to buy bins from players who started with basketry skill, currently they are the only ones who can craft baskets.
Tarp is used in architecture skill, it required for someof the tent recipes.
