Not seeing everyone in chat
Earlier in the weekend like Thurs/Fri I could see the user Bossman chatitng. Later in the weekend I couldn't not.
I was talking to another user Pyro. Then it appeared he was having a conversation to himself so I asked who he was talking to and he said Bossman.
So it was apparent I could not see Bossman's messages, nor could he see mine, but Pyro could see both of ours.
Thus I noticed several times where it appeared other users talking to themselves and knew that wasn't the case. I just wasn't seeing all the messages from all the users.
Sorry if this is a known issue, haven't seen it discussed recently.
Re: Not seeing everyone in chat
Chat is range-limited. So Bossman was out of range during that second conversation.

Ahh really, that's bizarre as I would not expect that in "GENERAL" chat. Perhaps a regional, spatial etc maybe, but not General. do we know what that range is set to?
Re: Not seeing everyone in chat
The range should be set to your adjacent 'zones'. Each zone is 2048x2048 meters right now, so chat has a large range, but is definitely not a global world chat.

Thanks!
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
That can be annoying though as you only see half of a conversation.
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
Would you prefer chat is confined to each zone? So that you can't talk to someone 5m away if they are over the border? Or would you rather chat be global and covers the entire map?
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
Both, have a global chat tab and a zone chat tab, am guessing that most of the chat will be on the tribe chat tab. (assuming they implement the multiple chat tab feature seen in alot of mmorpgs)
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
As far as I know there won't be global chat.
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
Personally... I like it the way it is... makes more sense to me.. but then what do I know :P
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
With the new zone layout. Does this rule still apply where it is just current zone and adjacent or is it the same range as before?
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
It's based on current and adjacent zone, so the range will be smaller right now.

Whaaat!
Just make sure you have your thick weave blanket equipped and right-click your nearest fire.
Type 3-8 characters into the textbox prompt and submit to translate it into smoke signals.
Players who have a higher level in (blahblahblah(firemaking?)) can produce smoke signals that are more distinct and can be viewed from farther away, requiring less perception than that of a lesser-skilled smoke signaler.
Players with higher perception can view and interpret smoke signals from further away.
As technology progresses, I can see more uses for this sort of communication.

Bam, I just made a new tribe role, communications officer.

good idea tbh... lulz too i can see the funny messages already in the sky ....
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
There should be a local chat where you can only hear the people around you. You could speak in 3 different way:
/whisper <Message>
Only the people who are really close can hear you.
/say <Message>
Everyone around you can hear you.
/yell <Message>
People can hear you from far away.
Global / Help Chat for support and a Tribe Chat.
Re:Not seeing everyone in chat
Well ideally they will implement a proper chat panel. Not one that requires prefixes like that to work with.
Also, you can already whisper to another player or shout to the entire server using console commands.
edit:
But if they do implement yell it needs to rely on your energy bar.

This would be great, lol :)
Information from the Features page:
Quote:
General chat based on hearing range.
Whisper directed to specific players within range.
Town and player group chat channels.
Town message boards where players can post announcements.
Town markets where players can place auctions, items for sale or trade and want ads.
Town mail boxes where players can send items and private messages.
It's been confirmed that "Whisper directed to specific players within range" was a mistype, whisper won't be based on hearing range.
