Graphics Overhaul
I would recommend a full graphics overhaul

This game with a graphics overhaul with make a world of difference. the game itself is amazing and with what seems to be a lot of the glitches worked out. with a fresh clean high resolution graphics overhaul i think you could bring a big influx of members.

If I could add to this, the #1 biggest turn-off for me back when I first started playing this game 10 years ago was the SpeedTree trees. Honestly, they are hard on the eyes - ugly in fact. Maybe that is intentional, I dunno. Improved trees would really make a huge difference in the asthetics of the game, imho.

I wish I could afford a full graphics overhaul!

What I can do and am working on is upgrading the DirectX version that the game runs on. This should allow me to do a few things I plan to implement.

1) Better terrain surface system (supporting more textures and using bump maps / normal maps to improve the look of the terrain). I also would like to replace the current surface textures with new ones.

2) Improve the trees. The current trees are the old Speed Tree models but with more 'painted' textures that were intended to match the building texture style. I agree with you that they don't look very good. At the very least I could re-implement Speed Tree with more realistic textures and without 'optimizations' that were done by one of the original coders (the optimizations removed bump and normal maps for the trees). I could possibly implement the latest version of Speed Tree with all new tree models and textures. That's a bit pricey though.

3) Add more lights (including torches).

4) Add effects (especially in combat).

So, not a complete overhaul but I am working towards upgrading the overall look of the environment and I think that will go a long way.
