Changes to combat weapon types
Balancing Weapons a bit.

Currently Shovels are the #1 weapon of choice due to how combat is done. This is hands down the best weapon. Highest damage per attack, longest reach.
Blades are the worse. Lowest damage per attack, shortest reach.

DPS wise doesn't matter with how combat is done. You charge your attack and release making faster attacking weapons next to worthless for DPS because of how you hit and run tactics. But even DPS wise, blades are really lacking in DPS.

I suggest you change things up a bit.

Suggested Changes
Blades
Blades do 4x damage on backstab multiplier (currently backstab is 0%, 25%, 50%), I think you should have it 0%, 100%, 200%. This would make them more of a sneak attack and a DPS type weapon for people.
Don't touch their reach or their speed.

Axes
Axes would be 50% increased STR damage. So instead of getting say 20% STR bonus, you get 30% STR bonus. If you have 50% STR bonus, you would get 75% STR bonus.
Don't touch their base damage, speeds, nor range.

Clubs
Clubs would get 1/2 loss of skill vs defense adjustment. So if you fighting with lower skill or armored targets, your skill vs defense wouldn't be as affected by using clubs. Say fighting with 100 skill vs someone in bone armor your normal skill vs defense adjustment might be -25%. But if you using a club you would only take a -12.5%, but never get a bonus. So you wouldn't get say 2x damage if you had really high skill vs a naked target which would normally give a +10% bonus, you should still only get a +10% bonus.
Don't touch their base damage, speeds, nor range.

Picks/Shovels
Increase Pick base damage to that of a shovel. Slow pick speeds down to the same speed of a shovel. Increase range of a Pick to that of a shovel.
Don't change shovels at all.

This would greatly help balance out weapons to different choices for players on how they like to fight. Also in weapon choice based on stats.

ALL Pre Order weapons need to be changed to reflect their base type weapons.
So a preorder Shovel would have the same base damage/attack speed as any other shovel. Currently this is NOT the case.

After talking to some people about this, I feel like it's not far enough to increase blades by 4x for backstab, and axes by +50% increased STR.
We feel like 5x backstab, and +75% STR bonus would be better.

I can't edit the first post, but I feel like this is more balanced.

Here are the numbers using that.

Current Combat System (100 Quality Weapon, 100 STR, 50% Backstab, -25% Defense, Fully Power Swing, 100% Durability)
Axes = 27.70 Damage
Blades = 20.78 Damage
Clubs = 30.01 Damage
Picks = 32.32 Damage
Shovels = 34.63 Damage

Suggested Combat System (100 Quality Weapon, 100 STR, 50% Backstab, -25% Defense, Fully Power Swing, 100% Durability)
Axes = 34.63 Damage
Blades = 48.48 Damage
Clubs = 35.01 Damage
Picks/Shovels = 34.63 Damage

Current Combat System (100 Quality Weapon, 100 STR, 0% Backstab, -25% Defense, Fully Power Swing, 100% Durability)
Axes = 18.47 Damage
Blades = 13.81 Damage
Clubs = 20.01 Damage
Picks = 21.55 Damage
Shovels = 23.09 Damage

Suggested Combat System (100 Quality Weapon, 100 STR, 0% Backstab, -25% Defense, Fully Power Swing, 100% Durability)
Axes = 23.09 Damage
Blades = 13.81 Damage
Clubs = 23.34 Damage
Picks/Shovels = 23.09 Damage

voted Yes.

At the moment shovels are the only weapons that are used.

So these ideas give more options to players and doesnt make a new player
feel they've made a wrong choice right at the start. A new player
could fight Noob type animals with these.

PVP would benefit most as it opens up a whole new side of play options for pvpers and will compliment Bows and archery well, when they are introduced.

I'll take all of this into consideration when I work on combat after the creature updates.

So far, I've set up combat with several switches so that we can test various options when the time comes. These options include completely removing the charging up of weapons.

Thanks!

Yes, I do think testing before changing is needed because I was doing some basic testing, and the skill vs defense of clubs would be really powerful for new players or fighting hard monsters. Like super good. So some more testing and balancing would be needed even in this system.

Great to hear that you have some ideas for this already, thanks for the reply.
