Water spikes on a cliff

I found some little water spikes on the side of a cliff.

Okay so I went here to check out what lil might have been seeing and well, its quite odd.

For me its not rendering as a spike, but a wireframe of what should be rendering as water. The below image is from the same coords as given by lil.
