Are there any old city ruins from before the world collapsed? I have seen some screens with old cars and such and was curious if there are any ruins. I have not seen anything anywhere...

in this first area there will not be any buildings etc. The idea is that you are a bunch of survivors out in the wilderness (campers?) and have no communication or way to contact the outside world
