Considering that a bonus will or is supposed to be given for wearing tribal colors, maybe the tribal color selection should actually be from the color of cloth and leathers in game?

Maybe a piece of clothing that would mark your tribe, must be crafted, and only gives bonus if you use proper cloth (you choose at tribe window). A hat? A quilt? Something else?
