I bought the game when it was released, never really gave it a go and let my sub expire, I'm curious is it possible to solo? or do tribes/claiming an area still need X amount of people?
Any tips would be great, considering rejoining.?

Yes you can solo, although it is more difficult now. You can have your own land if you want to play by yourself.
