so there is no need for extensive terraforming.
Exactly, make terraforming a long process, only to be taken up by larger tribes, or to flatten land. Open it up to everyone. Except in tribal areas where only tribe members can do it. Lastly make limitations on steepness of incline.

    Boom. problem solved.
I hope that the building/terraforming skills are specialisations that are affected by the soft cap. This will greatly limit griefing and mucking about, and also mean that the people who really enjoy this kind of thing will be able to make it their own niche. I have no real interest in it at all but will likely end up doing it just *because* if its not part of the soft cap.

I think Pid didn't mean titles, only level of access of terraforming....some members could terraform in the center of the villages, other could only do that at the private area assigned by the leaders.
I meant this. Kiwi's post is understandable and I agree with him, but it was not what I meant. "Titles" or, better, "roles" should be one thing. Permissions to terraform is another. And there really are just two kinds in a tribe: private (personal) and public (tribal) structures/areas.

In my opinion this doesn't requires any coding, this is something the tribe council can set very well, if a tribe member doesn't obey the rules and mess with the land in the public areas (inside the tribe territory) he would probably get kicked out of the tribe.
Yes, but this means that the "council" should be able to identify offenders, distinguish between accidental and intentional damages and revert (undo) the wrongs...

This seems much more difficult to implement. The "permissions" allow to prevent damages altogether.

Chill, honestly you think way too much into this. Leave it up to the tribe leaders, and there are ways to find out. Having sabotages and griefs are part of every game, by trying to stop them all your going to ruin it for everyone.

I hope, really do hope, because I would think it would be a huge game-play mistake otherwise, to enable a tribal leaders privileges allowing him/her to grant terraforming to every tribe member, or a few; the allowable should be up to the tribe leader rather than a game code restriction.

Surprised this thread is still going!

    Re:Terraforming wasted?

In fact it wasn't... someone necrothreaded it after a week and now it's resurrected.

BTW I think that slowing down terraforming is wrong. Who actually needs to do some terraforming will have a very hard time to get the job done.

But it is also true that after an initial phase the village is more or less established. What do you do at that point with your TF skill? On the long run other skills might be better...

Yea. For anyone that is actually in-game and believes terraforming needs to be slowed, has real time perception issues

Came from one of my FAQ's

    Nothing set in stone.
that's exactly what i was referring to. that's quite a game breaker.
but, on the other hand, letting every member terraform is wrong too. all hell will break loose and the whole territory would be messed up, because everybody of the 40 or so members will want to terraform their little patch of land...
that doesnt happen in wurm online maybe in some cases

I'm just back from a long terraforming session. I will posting screenshots tomorrow, it's too late now and I don't have time to upload them to imageshack.

What I wanted to say is that TF is really great, I had a lot of fun. But to be good at it you need some experience. "Precision" is very important, it is not easy to get the right slopes and level. There is a lot of work involved. I see that a single player cannot build more than so much in a day. A group of, say 10 people, could do much more, if correctly coordinated.

Today I played around with some other features and I have to say it's already fun. When all things will be set up there's great potential for Xsyon! I really hope this will work out well and all the bugs will be removed, because it's so different than those main-stream titles I'm sick of...

    Go Jordi, go!

    =D

EDIT: I wanted to say: It took hours to do much less than I expected. If TF is slowed down it will be unfeasible. Right now it has the right pace, not too fast and not too slow. It's exactly how it should be!
