Combat Stats

In Xsyon, there are many factors that will effect how well your character performs in combat. The first of these factors is your base stats.

Strength will simply effect how hard you hit in combat, the stronger you are, the harder you hit.

Fortitude will effect how much damage your character can sustain before being knocked unconscious, as well as yours characters endurance. (Affects how many hit points you have)

Agility will effect how quickly your character can run, as well as how fast your character can swing their weapon.

Dexterity refers to your characters hand eye coordination; however has no effect on combat at the moment. It is thought this skill will affect bow accuracy or damage when they are released into the game. Skills

The next set of factors that will determine your characters combat effectiveness is his skills. Here is a basic synopsis of what each of them does.

Unarmed Combat will effect how well your character does damage with his fists and possibly tools. In the future, unarmed combat will become more expansive and consist of kicks and other moves.

Armed Combat covers the general use of weaponry. Without these, even with decent skill in a specific weapon, you will not be very effective. This is the parent skill for all of the weapons in the game.

Weapon Skills

Each weapon skill will determine the damage output you give out with the respective types of weapons. Right now the amount of weaponry in Xsyon is limited. But here is a list of your basic weapons.

Fists are as simple as it sounds, you use martial combat and punch people. (currently does no damage, but drains stamina of target)

Blades covers the use of combat knives, katanas, swords and many more types of bladed weaponry. Fastest attack, but shortest range.

Clubs cover the use of wood, metal and plastic clubs. Such items include baseball bats, standard wood clubs and metal clubs with spikes. They vary greatly in range and deal moderate damage at low skill levels. These will probably be used for dealing heavy damage towards users with heavy armour.

Picks cover the use of basic picks and shovels. These will probably be better used for the penetration of armour. Furthest range, slow, but high damage.

Axes vary greatly in range. Some are stubby types of axes, whilst some are very large. They do higher damage than all other types of weapons, however, their swing speed is very slow. Basics Of Xsyon Combat

Unlike many fighting games, Xsyon uses aimed combat which involves combat featuring several different directions of attack and defence, as well as variable damage depending on where a target is hit. Aimed combat requires much more practice than standard combat included in the majority of online games, mainly because of the reaction time needed and the focus required to block incoming attacks.

Setting up for Combat

In the Xsyon Key bind page, located on the game menu, you will a small box that is either checked or unchecked named ‘Mouse Combat’. In Xsyon, you have the ability to wield 2 weapons and the mouse combat option allows you to choose whether you would like to use both weapons for attack and defence, or one weapon for attacking and the other for defending.

Mouse Combat On

Mouse combat allows the user to fight without having to use any keyboard button ‘Modifiers’. A modifier will change a user from attack mode to defence mod (and vice versa) when held down and released and to some, the modifier makes combat more difficult. If this is the case, mouse combat is for you. Mouse combat will make your left hand weapon your parry weapon (blocking weapon) while your right hand weapon will be your attacking weapon. There is a large disadvantage to this, as you will not be able to attack an opponent with your left hand weapon, meaning less attack options for your opponent to block and a smaller area of attack for yourself.

Mouse Combat Off (Advised)

With mouse combat turned off, you will need to hold down the block key (Left Alt by default) to activate blocking mode but this will allow you to block with both your left and right weapons giving you more defence against your opponent. Along with this, you will also be able to attack with either of your weapons which will allow you to attack from either side of your body, giving you two arcs of potential attack, rather than just a single. Attacking In Xsyon

As I mentioned earlier, Xsyon uses aiming combat which means you have the ability to swing your weapons in different directions, allowing you to aim for a weak spot of an opponent such as the side and the back or attack in a direction your opponent isn’t blocking towards.

To attack, you must be in combat mode (default key ‘c’). You use the left and right mouse buttons to attack with your left and right weapons accordingly and the longer you hold down your mouse button, the more damage you will do. The power of your swing is shown by the green bar that appears while swinging on your avatar, or by the yellow bar just above your hotbar.

Attack Directions

You can attack an opponent using a left swing, a right swing, a stab and an overhead attack. Keep in mind that your side swings (left and right) have a larger arc, meaning that you can hit opponents easier while stabbing and overhead attacks have a smaller arc but allow you to aim your attack at an enemy accurately, which is especially important if you’re fighting alongside friends so you do not hit them accidentally. The direction of your swing is decided by the direction your mouse is moving when you press down the attack button.

Where to aim?

Of course, the best place to aim is your opponent! However, when fighting an opponent, you will want to try and attack certain areas of their body for maximum damage. Enemies take 150% damage when they are hit in the back and 125% damage when hit in the side. Try to get behind your opponent for maximum damage and maximum damage reduction to yourself.

Defense in Xsyon

Block (currently not implemented) Block will relate to use of a shield in combat.

Parrying

Parrying an attack in Xsyon will greatly reduce the damage an attack will deal to you if it is successful, and is an important aspect of Xsyon combat, especially 1v1. Parrying is achieved by holding down your parry key (with mouse combat OFF, this is the Left Alt key by default) as you would when attacking, in the direction of the opponents attack. For example, if an opponent was swinging the left of you, you would parryleft to successfully block the attack.

Parry effectiveness is decided on your parrying skill so the higher your parry, the more damage is negated.

Dodging And Manoeuvring

Although dodging hasn’t been implemented to Xsyon at the moment, this doesn’t stop you from moving out of your opponents swings via jumps and sprinting! Often, it is better to run or jump out the way of your opponent’s attacks instead of blocking. This is especially true if your opponent is using a fast weapon such as a knife.

The biggest downside to manoeuvring during a fight is the energy cost, which in battle is just as important as your health. When you’re running low on energy, it is best to block/parry attacks while moving slower to reduce energy consumption.
